Canadian Prime Minister Responds to Lake Ontario Renaming

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has reacted to President Donald Trump’s recent decision to rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America,” amidst rising tensions between the U.S. and Canada.

On Thursday, Trump enacted an executive order that officially changed the name of Lake Ontario, one of North America’s Great Lakes, to “Lake America.”

In a post on X, Carney responded to the renaming by describing it as indicative of a “changing” United States. He emphasized that the lake will always remain Lake Ontario in the eyes of Canadians.

“The name Lake Ontario comes from the Wendat word Ontari’io, which, fittingly, translates to ‘the lake is beautiful, the lake is big,'” Carney stated. “This name is over 400 years old, long before Canada’s Confederation and the U.S. Declaration of Independence. We understand that America is undergoing changes—its trade relationships, foreign policies, national monuments, and even its names for places. But Canadians recognize that the truth is simply calling it Lake Ontario—past, present, and future.”

This situation arises in light of heightened tensions between the two nations, particularly following Carney’s implementation of retaliatory tariffs of up to 50% on certain U.S. imports.

Trump commented on the trade conflict, stating, “The Canadian officials have created this trade war very poorly. They’re terrible negotiators. They impose 400% tariffs on our farmers.”
