Cat Survives 380-Foot Fall After Owners Die in Brice Canyon Incident

A cat’s remarkable survival story emerged after a tragic incident at a popular Utah landmark, where her two owners lost their lives. The Garfield County Sheriff’s Office reported that the cat fell a staggering 380 feet, yet managed to live through the ordeal.

The deceased, Matthew Nannen, 45, and Bailey Crane, 58, were visiting Inspiration Point in Utah’s Bryce Canyon National Park when the accident occurred, possibly during the night or early morning hours. These details were highlighted in a report by The Salt Lake Tribune.

Miraculously, the cat, named Mirage and believed to be around 12 years old, was discovered by hikers the following evening inside a soft black pet carrier, near one of her guardians’ bodies.

Authorities confirmed the identities of Nannen and Crane the next day. As reported by CBS News, the cause of their fall remains unclear, though it is thought they may have crossed over a guardrail at the viewpoint.

Despite the trauma, Mirage only suffered a couple of broken canines and several fractured ribs. The organization Best Friends Animal Society noted that she seemed to have withstood the accident remarkably well. She was friendly during examinations and was able to eat and drink on her own.

After undergoing normal blood tests, it was determined that she didn’t have any internal injuries.

The couple reportedly lived out of a U-Haul and had recently traveled to Utah from Arizona. Best Friends Animal Society plans to reach out to relatives of the deceased owners to discuss adopting Mirage, if no family connection can be established.

Inspiration Point features breathtaking views, including the Blythe Amphitheater — known for having the world’s largest collection of rock spires.
