Catholic Faithful Pay Respects to Pope as His Tomb Opens to Public

Vatican City (AP) — Roman Catholic faithful began visiting Pope Francis’ tomb on Sunday, submitting past the simple white tomb of Major St. Mary, the day after he was said goodbye by the powerful people of the world and crowds of hundreds of thousands.

A white rose was placed on the tomb called “Franciscus.” This is the name of the Latin Pope. Light casts a warm glow on the tomb, recreating the cross on the chest of the late Pope on the wall above it.

“For me, Pope Francis was an inspiration and a guide,” Elias Carabarahar said.

Caravalhal lives in Rome, but after his death on Easter Monday at the age of 88, he was unable to pay tribute to Francis when his body was lying in the province of St. Peter’s Cathedral. He said he visited the grave “to be grateful for what he did.”

The tomb will be opened second in the nine days of Francis’ official mourning, after which the Conclave will be held to elect the next Pope.

Meanwhile, a special Mass was held at St. Peter’s Square, led by the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin. Parolyn is considered the next candidate to be the Pope because of his prominence in the Catholic hierarchy.

Pope Francis chose a burial site at Major St. Mary’s Basilica, near the Major of Madonna icon, which he admired. Because it reflects his “humble, simple and essential” life.
