The Federal Reserve announced on Tuesday its intention to follow the court’s ruling in any forthcoming lawsuits concerning Lisa Cook, a member of the Federal Reserve Board, who has challenged President Trump’s attempt to dismiss her.
A spokesperson for the Fed stated, “Through her personal attorneys, Lisa Cook is making it clear that she will swiftly contest this action and seek a judicial confirmation of her role as a member of the Federal Reserve system.”
The spokesperson added that the Federal Reserve would adhere to the court’s decision.
This development follows a letter from Trump on Monday, where he claimed to be firing Cook due to suspicions of mortgage fraud. Cook’s attorney, Abbe David Lowell, asserted that Trump lacks the authority to remove her from her position.
On Monday evening, Trump shared the letter on social media, which stated, “You will be effectively removed from the Federal Reserve Board’s position.”
This ongoing confrontation heightens the existing tensions between the White House and the Federal Reserve. Trump has been urging the Fed to take action for months, yet the board has consistently resisted his requests.
While prices have been climbing in the economy recently, unemployment has actually decreased, despite some setbacks in the job market.
The Fed is tasked with maintaining low unemployment and stable prices. It does this by adjusting short-term interest rates, where higher rates typically lead to reduced profits, hindering hiring, while lower rates can stimulate hiring and investment.
Trump has been exerting pressure on the Fed through unconventional tactics, hoping to bolster the economy even amid inflationary pressures.
In addition to criticizing Jerome Powell, the Fed chair, Trump has mocked him for overspending on renovations of Fed facilities, arguing against Powell’s new spending estimates during rare joint appearances. Powell, however, has dismissed those claims.
Bill Palt, head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), has accused Cook of mortgage fraud, pointing to documents suggesting that she may have claimed two different homes as primary residences.
From his position at the FHFA, Palt has also taken shots at Trump’s political adversaries, including Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), in response to the Capitol riots during the January 6 committee hearings, as well as New York Attorney General Letitia James, who has pursued multiple legal actions against the president.
