Prosecutors Decline Charges Against Conservative Influencer
In a recent decision, prosecutors in Portland have opted not to file criminal charges against Nick Sortor, a conservative influencer who was arrested last week during a protest outside a local Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility.
Sortor faced initial charges of second-degree disorderly conduct after being caught in the middle of several altercations that broke out late Thursday night.
“After carefully reviewing the investigation, including reports and video evidence, we do not believe we can prove the crime of disorderly conduct against Mr. Sortor beyond a reasonable doubt,” stated the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office, explaining that Sortor’s actions appeared to be defensive.
While Sortor has been cleared, two other individuals arrested during the protest will still face charges related to disorderly conduct.
District Attorney Nathan Vasquez emphasized, “Free speech does not include the freedom to commit crimes. It doesn’t matter the political beliefs; what matters is the evidence of a crime.”
A memo released on Monday detailed an incident where Sortor was recording outside the ICE facility. He reportedly faced aggression from an individual in black clothing who seemed to recognize him, while another person pushed him with an umbrella and others swung objects as he tried to escape, according to police reports.
Following his arrest, Sortor expressed his determination to fight the charges, insisting he did nothing wrong. He mentioned in a tweet about an upcoming court appearance, stating, “I will NOT take a plea deal of any kind. I will fight this until the end.”
White House Press Secretary raised concerns about the incident after Sortor’s arrest, pointing out that he was ambushed while trying to document the unfolding events. She criticized the police for arresting Sortor instead of the individuals who allegedly assaulted him.
“This incident highlights a troubling trend in Portland, where groups believe they can dictate who gets to be in their city. It’s not theirs; it’s the city of the American people,” she said, adding that President Trump is looking into reducing federal aid to Portland due to the situation.
Sortor also shared footage of another incident where he claimed he was attacked by Antifa members while simply walking on a public sidewalk near the ICE facility, stating they ripped an American flag from his hands, although he managed to retrieve it.
Overall, the situation remains complex, with ongoing debates about free speech and law enforcement’s role during protests in Portland.
