Chicago Mayor Defends Spending Campaign Funds On Makeup By Touting Support Of ‘Black And Brown-Owned’ Small Businesses

Chicago’s Democratic mayor, Brandon Johnson, defended spending more than $30,000 in campaign funds on makeup and haircuts as support for “Black-owned” small businesses, according to The Center Square.

The Johnson campaign spent $4,000 at hair salons and more than $20,000 at cosmetics stores. Election Expense Report It revealed 42 separate expenditures on make-up magic by Johnson’s campaign. Johnson responded to the reports at a press conference on Wednesday by saying the Electoral Commission had spent the money on “a range of things”. according to To Centre Square. “I make sure I say to everyone in this room that I’m calling on you to support small businesses,” Johnson told reporters at the event, “especially Black people to get their hair and makeup done.”

Political campaigns are prohibited from spending money on things like candidates’ clothing or cars, with certain exceptions. according to Illinois Code Compilation.

“My campaign is spending money on food,” Johnson told reporters during a press conference on Wednesday. “We support Black and brown owned businesses, women owned businesses. We support printing businesses. There are a number of things that my campaign is spending money on.”

“If they don’t think that’s a good use of money to support small businesses, Black and People of Color businesses, then that’s something they have to deal with when they encounter God,” Johnson added.

Johnson is not the only Illinois mayor to come under fire for lavish spending. Tiffany Henyard, the Democratic mayor of Dolton, Illinois, was criticized for trips to Times Square, Atlanta and Austin, Texas. according to The funds donated to WGN were used to purchase first-class airfare, luxury hotels such as the Marriott and the Four Seasons, and meals at fine restaurants.

“You should all be ashamed because you’re all Black people. You’re all Black people! And you’re all beating up and attacking Black women in positions of power,” Henyard said in a video responding to criticism of the spending. Posts At X in February. “You should all be ashamed of yourself.”
