Chicago Teacher Faces Backlash Over Facebook Post
A physical education teacher from a school in West Chicago is now on administrative leave amid threats to his employment over a Facebook post he made recently, in which he expressed support for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
In his post, the teacher wrote “GO ICE.” This prompted a swift reaction from activists in the largely Hispanic community, who began sharing the post widely and calling for his dismissal. Due to safety concerns for the individual, his name has not been disclosed.
One comment on social media captured the sentiment of many: “Imagine working as a teacher in an elementary school in West Chicago with a large Latino population, promoting ICE is just… not cool.” Another user described the teacher in unflattering terms.
In response to the situation, flyers began circulating online which stated that the teacher’s dismissal is crucial for the well-being of students and their families. Activists argued that the teacher’s public support for ICE is both inappropriate and contrary to the values expected from someone in an educational role.
The petition also urged for students to skip school in protest. Although Fox News Digital couldn’t verify the specifics of the teacher’s comments or the accompanying Facebook post, it appears that his account has since been deleted. The petition indicates that his remarks were a reply to an article about the community.
Local figures, including Illinois State Sen. Karina Villa, voiced support for distressed families, saying they stand firm against the comments made by the educator. She emphasized the need for an environment that feels safe for all students.
A district email that reached parents noted that the teacher had briefly resigned before retracting that decision and was allowed to return to work. The school has engaged an attorney to investigate the matter. The district emphasized its commitment to a welcoming environment for all students as the investigation was initiated.
After a public “listening session,” where parents voiced concerns including feelings of insecurity and cruelty stemming from the teacher’s post, the district confirmed the teacher would be placed on leave.
The district’s statement indicated they understand the worries this has caused and are committed to ensuring a safe environment for students. However, when questions arose regarding the specific policies possibly violated by the teacher’s actions, there was no response from the administration.
