Chief Justice Roberts Rejects Dem Demands for Meeting About Alito Flag Controversy

In his dissenting opinion, Justice Roberts said the Supreme Court would continue to follow the same rules “it has followed for 235 years” regarding which justices decide challenges.“Apart from ceremonial occasions, this is one of the few times in our nation’s history that a sitting Chief Justice has met with members of Congress, even in a public forum such as a committee hearing attended by members of both parties.”

“Issues of separation of powers and the importance of maintaining judicial independence to counter such events,” Roberts wrote.

Roberts also noted that a meeting on the matter would be “unwise” because Democrats are “interested” in a lawsuit seeking Justice Alito’s resignation.

“Furthermore, the proposed format – a meeting only with leaders of one party who have expressed an interest in matters currently pending before the court – only emphasises the unwise nature of participating in such meetings,” he concluded.

“When my wife flew the Call to Heaven flag, I was unfamiliar with the flag. She may have mentioned that it was a flag that dated back to the American Revolutionary War, and I assumed she was flying it to express a religious and patriotic message. I was unaware of, and neither was she, the connection between this historic flag and the Stop the Steal Movement,” he wrote. “She did not fly it to associate herself with that flag or any other group, and the fact that a new group uses an older, historic flag does not erase all other meanings of the flag.”

“A reasonable person not motivated by political or ideological considerations or a desire to influence the outcome of the Supreme Court’s decisions would have recognized these events as being ‘[do] does not meet the applicable shunning criteria.”

“I am therefore obligated to reject your request to resign,” he wrote.

The pressure campaign against Alito is the latest by the left-wing media and the Democratic Party. Targeted Conservative Justice Clarence Thomas similarly called for his removal from politically expedient cases.
