Dissidents from around the world gathered in Geneva, Switzerland, to tell stories of their survival and to tell them about their escape from the authoritarian regime. In just a few days, the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) will begin its 58th session in the same city.
In his opening remarks on the Geneva Summit's Human Rights and Democracy, UN Watch executive director Hillerneuer set a straight record for UNHRC.
“When most people hear the word “UN Human Rights Council,” they wear white robes walking along Mount Olympus, and make decisions based on facts, logic and morality. I imagine him wearing a long white beard wearing a white robe that he has fallen. You can't get far from the truth,” Neuer said.
“It's not Aristotle, Socrates or Plato that sits around the table at the UN Human Rights Council across the street, and not many of the world's worst human rights offenders. A record of abuse.”

Several dissidents had the opportunity to tell their stories, but many people weren't. Communists and activists spoke about friends and family, and local students spoke about people who do not exist. The summit used empty chairs to represent absenteeism.
The United Nations agency has 47 member states serving three years at a time. Opponents from the four current UNHRC members (Sudan, Cuba, Vietnam and China) have spoken tragic stories of what Neuer calls “the world's worst abuser.”

The Times Wang photographs his father, Dr. Binzhan, a photograph of human rights and democracy at the 2025 Geneva Summit, where he is detained in China.
Times Wang, a US-based human rights lawyer, spoke about his father's incarceration in China. Dr. Wang Binzhan, who was kidnapped by Chinese authorities in 2002, is the longest-running political opponent in China. He is trapped in solitary cells to this day.
Additionally, Sebastien Lai, son of Jimmy Lai, the founder of Apple Daily, spoke about the detention of his father by Chinese authorities that began in 2020. AppleDaily was Hong Kong's biggest newspaper until 2021 when it was forced to close. If convicted, Jimmy Rye could be sentenced to life in prison. He is currently in solitary confinement and multiple appeals have been denied.

“The good people of democracies are stronger than they can always hope for when they participate in the efforts, when they work together, when they work together,” says Vladimir Kara Muruza told the Summit.
Russian democratic activist Kara Muruza was jailed in April 2022 for opposing the war in Ukraine. He was released in August 2024. Before his recent incarceration, Kara Muruza survived two addiction attempts at the hands of Russia.
Garry Kass, a human rights activist and an outspoken critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, expressed little faith in the United Nations. He said that “corruption runs so deeply” that the international community is “close to the question” that “not merely reform it, but merely reform it” but replace it with an institution. It is claiming.
In his keynote address, Iranian Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi called on world law to overthrow the regime of the Islamic Republic.
“What is caused by the Islamic Republic can be resolved through its removal,” Pahlavi said.
Pahlavi also spoke about the fight for the freedom of Iranian women, pointing out that it exceeds the requirements of the hijab. He says their fight is “not part of the fabric. It's about regaining their equality and their country.”

President Donald Trump recently pulled the United States away from UNHRC. In a 2025 executive order on withdrawal from UNHRC, Trump told Neuer, “UNHRC protects human rights abusers by using organizations to protect themselves from scrutiny.” He expresses similar feelings.
