China showcases missiles and drones at military parade with Xi, Putin, and Kim Jong Un

China showcased a range of new military weapons on Wednesday during a parade to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the conclusion of World War II. It seemed like a strategic move to flaunt its military capabilities, especially with Chinese President Xi Jinping joined by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Among the impressive displays were submarine drones, hypersonic missiles, and advanced laser weapons. The event, which lasted about 90 minutes, also featured fighter jets and bombers.

At the conclusion of his speech, Xi remarked, “The rejuvenation of the Chinese people cannot be blocked, and the noble goal of the peaceful development of human civilization must be victorious,” which, honestly, sounds pretty ambitious.

Submarine Drone

The AJX002, a nuclear-enabled unmanned vehicle resembling a narrow submarine, was a highlight among the drones. It can be up to 65 feet long and is intended for surveillance and reconnaissance missions. Interestingly, this isn’t the only drone China presented; they also displayed the GJ-11 stealth attack drone.

Hypersonic Missile

A polar-silent anti-ship missile was also unveiled. This missile has reportedly been tested against mock US aircraft carriers and several types were mentioned, which could raise some eyebrows in the US Navy. Indeed, the Navy is actively patrolling the Western Pacific.

Laser Weapon

China introduced high-energy laser weapons too, aimed particularly at defending against potential drone attacks, according to sources.

Interestingly, the timing of this parade coincided with the Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s (SCO) summit, where Xi is expected to announce further expansions and create a development bank. Collaboratively, Chinese leaders are stepping up by pledging $1.4 billion in loans for SCO members over the next three years.

While this military show of strength undoubtedly aims to assert China’s position on the global stage, one wonders about the implications for international relations. Oh, and former President Trump seemed to have had something to say about Xi, Putin, and Kim, suggesting they were plotting against the United States. Quite a claim, isn’t it?
