Chip Roy presents legislation to eliminate tax-exempt status from CAIR and other organizations linked to terrorism

Legislation Aimed at Cutting Tax Exemptions for Terror-Linked Groups

Texas Republican Rep. Chip Roy is spearheading an initiative to stop indirect financial support from Americans to organizations connected to terrorism. On Tuesday, he introduced a bill intended to eliminate the tax-exempt status for extremist groups closely linked to terrorist entities.

This proposal, referred to as the Terrorism Tax Exemption Act, specifically targets organizations that exploit tax exemptions under broadly defined charitable aims. Among those under scrutiny is the Council on American-Islamic Relations, which has documented ties to groups like Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood. Roy points out that the FBI has recognized CAIR as an unindicted co-conspirator in a major investigation back in 2007 involving the Holy Land Foundation.

“It’s simply not reasonable for the U.S. to provide tax-exempt status to organizations that maintain connections to terrorism,” Roy noted, emphasizing that Americans are, perhaps unwittingly, supporting terrorism by funding such groups. “This should have been addressed a long time ago; it’s absurd,” he added.

Roy stated that any organization with links to terrorism ought to forfeit tax benefits, firmly advocating for CAIR’s immediate removal from tax-exempt status.

“Some groups, like CAIR, are too entwined with extremist organizations that act violently for their political agendas,” Roy remarked, citing instances where CAIR’s leadership has endorsed disturbing acts of violence. “This situation needs to change immediately.”
