Investigation Launched at Truett McConnell University
Dr. Emir Caner, president of Truett McConnell University (TMU), has taken administrative leave while a third-party investigation is initiated following sexual assault allegations against former Vice President Dr. Brad Reynolds. These allegations were brought forward by Haley Swinson, a former student who worked at TMU from 2013 to 2018.
After a recent board meeting, TMU expressed that the decision was prompted by “real concern” and the impact on the community.
“The chairman, Robby Foster, presented three proposals to the trustees. After a thorough discussion, three suggestions were made on how to proceed,” a TMU statement indicated. The information was also shared on social media.
Specific recommendations included the appointment of Richard Hyde alongside Phoenix Research LLC for the investigation, while Dr. John Yarbra is expected to provide support to TMU throughout the process. They will also help in making final recommendations to the trustees.
According to reports, these recommendations were unanimously approved by the board of trustees.
“We ask everyone to keep the entire TMU family and all involved in their prayers,” the statement concluded.
During the board meeting, about 30 alumni, organized by Heather Pillsbury—who graduated in 2000—gathered outside Odell Hall to call for more transparency and accountability regarding these allegations.
“I believe that a fair third-party investigation is crucial,” Pillsbury remarked. “This is about uncovering any potential wrongdoing and ensuring accountability to the standards we uphold in our community.”
Earlier statements from the university mentioned that Reynolds had been involved in inappropriate relationships and was under investigation by authorities in White County starting in early 2024. Initially, Reynolds was placed on administrative leave and was eventually removed from his position.
TMU also addressed Swinson’s claims that her reports of sexual misconduct were not taken seriously by the administration.
“Complaints regarding sexual discrimination, harassment, or other misconduct have been reported and were quickly investigated and resolved in a timely manner,” the university stated previously. “All employees are trained to report any suspicious behavior to Title IX or the HR office.”
