Since his passing last year, Bob Uecker has continued to play a significant role in the Brewers’ culture. On Wednesday night, during a monumental occasion for the franchise, Christian Yelich made it a point to honor the cherished broadcaster.
After the Brewers clinched their first-ever World Series title by defeating the Rays 4-1 in Game 5 in St. Petersburg, Florida, Yelich shared a heartfelt message for Uecker. “He’s smiling, man,” he told Ken Rosenthal during the Fox broadcast. “I really wish he could have been here to see this. It would have meant everything to him. We keep him close to our hearts, and this one is still for Bob and still for Ueck. Ueck, I love you, man, and we did it.”
Uecker, who served as the voice of the Brewers for 54 years, became a beloved icon not only among Brewers fans but for baseball aficionados everywhere.
He passed away on January 16, 2025, at the age of 90 after a private battle with cancer.
Before the first pitch on Wednesday, fans honored Uecker by placing beer cans at his statue, as reported by TMJ 4.
After the final out, Hall of Famer CC Sabathia paid tribute to Uecker in a post on X, writing, “Bob Uecker smiling down,” reflecting on his time in Milwaukee during the 2008 season.
During the Game 4 broadcast on Tuesday, Fox’s play-by-play announcer Joe Davis also paid homage to the legendary Brewers broadcaster. He emulated Uecker’s iconic home run call during Cooper Pratt’s solo shot in the 12th inning, saying, “Hitting a high drive! Deep left field! Get up, get up, gone!”
Davis later remarked on Uecker’s influence, stating, “Ueck is obviously a guy that you grew up listening to and was underrated because he was such a comic genius. His ability to master the craft and be an amazing play-by-play announcer didn’t get enough love. I was always studying him and listening to him, and just by osmosis, that stuff is in there.”
