Details Emerge on U.S. Attack Targeting Iran’s Leadership

U.S. intelligence had been tracking Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, for several months, gaining insights into his movements. This surveillance took on urgency leading up to a crucial meeting among Iranian officials at a heavily fortified location during a recent attack.

The CIA had a solid understanding of Khamenei’s typical behavior before receiving timely intelligence regarding this significant gathering in Tehran. According to reports from unnamed sources, American and Israeli military leaders adapted their strategies for what became known as Operation Epic Fury. They shifted from a nighttime assault to a surprise daytime attack, targeting Khamenei and approximately 40 senior Iranian officials, which included key figures like the defense minister and the intelligence chief.

Among those killed were Maj. Gen. Shamkhani and Maj. Gen. Pakpour, as reported by Iranian state media. Notably, the Chief of Staff of Iran’s Armed Forces, Abdulrahim Mousavi, was also among the casualties attributed to the coordinated U.S. and Israeli airstrikes.

This well-coordinated operation had apparently been in the works for months and was characterized as a tactical surprise. Israeli fighter jets took off early Saturday and reached Tehran just before 10 a.m., launching strikes on a fortified government compound where officials were assembled. Reports indicate that Khamenei and other senior officials were positioned in two separate, yet targeted buildings that were ultimately destroyed.

President Trump acknowledged Khamenei’s death shortly after, referring to him as “one of the most evil people in history.” He expressed that this action served justice not just for the Iranian people but also for Americans and others worldwide who suffered under Khamenei’s regime.

In subsequent remarks, Trump called for remaining Iranian officials to consider a diplomatic resolution, noting that the situation for negotiations seemed more favorable post-attack. There were mentions of a shift in sentiment among some in Iran’s military and security forces, with Trump suggesting that many no longer wished to fight and might seek protection from repercussions against their previous allegiances. He warned, however, that while he would grant “immunity” now, those who lingered would face dire consequences later.
