CNN's misleading report: Unreliable anonymous sources fail as Trump's Iran strike has dire consequences

After President Donald Trump’s military action against Iran’s nuclear enrichment site, CNN quickly attempted to critique the decision. They referenced leaked preliminary assessments and relied on unnamed sources who misleadingly suggested that the attack inflicted minimal damage. However, as subsequent reports indicated significant destruction, it pointed to CNN’s missteps and underscored the media’s tendency to depend on unreliable insiders willing to downplay conservative successes.

On June 25th, CNN published an “exclusive” article where correspondent Natasha Bertrand, along with two other journalists, scrutinized Trump’s assertion that the strike had “totally and completely erased” the Iranian facility. They also mentioned an early evaluation from a confidential defense agency assessment.

One source shared with CNN that “the initial assessment is that the US has probably incapacitated certain operations for several months.” Two unnamed individuals informed the outlet that the strike did not eliminate Iran’s uranium stock. One claimed the centrifuges were nearly “unharmed,” while another noted that the uranium had been relocated prior to the strike.

White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt told CNN that the first evaluation was “entirely wrong,” and dismissed the reliability of the “anonymous low-level sources from the intelligence community” who had leaked the information to them.

Even after later assessments corroborated the stance of the administration—that the facility suffered heavy damage—CNN adhered to its original narrative and defended its reporting. “We fully support Natasha Bertrand’s journalism and her colleagues’ reporting of the early intelligence assessments regarding the US attack on Iran,” CNN stated. They emphasized that these findings were subject to change based on further intelligence. They also noted President Trump’s own skepticism throughout the process.

However, some observers questioned the ethics of CNN’s reporters, suggesting it unwise to both report on assessments’ existence and critique their accuracy.

Critics from conservative circles lambasted CNN’s coverage, accusing the network and other mainstream media outlets of leaning on dubious leftist sources that often missed the mark, similar to their handling of Hunter Biden’s laptop story and the alleged cognitive decline of Joe Biden.

Curtis Houck, editor at Newsbusters, questioned the choice to hire someone like Bertrand, who he claims has a clear bias, citing her characterization of Hunter Biden’s laptop as a Russian disinformation campaign.

Chad Prather, host of “The Chad Prather Show,” posed a challenge to CNN, asking about the broader implications of their previous inaccuracies.

Conservative commentator Vince Dao remarked that CNN had misrepresented the assessment’s contents, accusing the network of propagating Pentagon narratives to justify military actions, thereby undermining the ideals of a free press.

As of late Monday, CNN continued to propagate the idea that the Trump administration’s strike was not very effective. In a published report, Rafael Grossi, chief of the UN nuclear watchdog, stated that it would take only a few months for Iran to resume enriching uranium, seemingly reinforcing early Pentagon evaluations that the US strike did not eliminate vital components of Iran’s nuclear program.

Grossi noted in an interview that while the strike was serious and caused notable damage, it did not eradicate all operational capabilities. “Iran can activate several centrifuge cascades to produce enriched uranium in just a few months, so it’s not accurate to claim total destruction,” he stated.

On Friday, a CNN spokesperson reported that the outlet received a letter from Trump’s attorney accusing them of defamation and demanding a retraction. CNN, however, defended its reporting.

Trump has since called for legal action against those he believes misrepresented assessments regarding the attack on Iranian nuclear sites.

Last week on social media, Trump stated, “The Democrats are the ones who leaked information regarding a complete failure to handle the Iranian nuclear situation. They should face prosecution!”

A CNN spokesperson confirmed that the outlet had responded to Trump’s lawyer, rejecting the claims made in the letter.
