John Dickerson to Depart CBS Evening News
John Dickerson, co-host of “CBS Evening News,” announced on Monday that he will be leaving the network, just weeks after Bari Weiss took on the role of editor-in-chief at CBS News.
Having been with CBS for 16 years, Dickerson was slated to replace Norah O’Donnell as host of the nightly news alongside Maurice DuBois in January 2025. He shared that his final broadcast will take place in December, revealing this news via Instagram. “Local news: At the end of this year, I will leave CBS, sixteen years after I sat in as Face the Nation anchor for the first time,” Dickerson wrote. “I am extremely grateful for all that CBS gave me—the work, the audience’s attention, and the honor of being a part of the network’s history—and I am thankful for my dear colleagues who’ve made me a better journalist and a better human. I will miss you.”
His decision to leave comes shortly after Skydance, the new owner of CBS News’ parent company, Paramount, appointed Weiss as editor after acquiring The Free Press for $150 million. Reports suggest that Weiss is actively trying to recruit Bret Baier, host of Fox News’ “Special Report.”
CBS provided the Daily Caller News Foundation with Dickerson’s statement when they reached out for comments.
In a related note, CBS recently settled a $10 billion lawsuit brought by former President Donald Trump regarding edits made to an October 2024 interview with then-Vice President Kamala Harris, who was a rival in the presidential election. This decision has drawn criticism from within the company, including Dickerson himself.
“Can you hold power to account after paying it millions?” he expressed during a July 3 edition of “Reporter’s Notebook.” “Can an audience trust you when it thinks you’ve traded away that trust? The audience will decide that our job is to show up to honor what we witness.”
