Trial for Fatal Stabbing of Texas High School Athlete
The coach of a Texas high school athlete, who reportedly was stabbed to death by Carmelo Anthony, broke down in tears while recounting the moment he realized the young man was “gone.” This tragic event unfolded on April 2, 2025, at Kuykendall Stadium, as Frisco track and soccer coach Robert Starr described the chaos he witnessed.
According to NBC5, Starr stated that when he got to the field, he found 17-year-old Austin Metcalfe with a “purple” face and a significant wound to his chest.
Throughout the emotional testimony, Metcalfe’s family was visibly distraught in the Collin County Courthouse auditorium in McKinney. Anthony, now 19, stands accused of using a folding knife to stab Metcalfe, following an argument initiated when Metcalfe requested Anthony to move from beneath the team tent.
As Starr recounted the scene, he began to weep, particularly as trainers attempted to revive Metcalfe. In that desperate moment, Metcalfe’s twin brother pointed at Anthony, pleading with Starr to intervene.
Despite being told to stand back, Starr approached Anthony before returning to Metcalfe, where everyone, including Starr and Metcalfe’s brother, was united in prayer. “We knew Austin was gone,” he recalled. The following day, Mrs. Starr sent a heartfelt message to Mr. Metcalf expressing her love and regret for not saying it more often.
Meanwhile, Metcalf’s father, Jeff, was seen wiping his eyes as the message was presented in court.
The incident reportedly escalated after Austin, a student at Frisco Memorial High School, told Anthony, a student at Frisco Centennial High School, to stay out of their designated area. What began as a shove allegedly ended in tragedy when Anthony stabbed Metcalfe, claiming self-defense.
Starr, who instructed Anthony along with several other teammates to organize the day’s events, clarified that the intention behind the tent was to define boundaries; only certain individuals were allowed under specific team tents.
Anthony has entered a plea of not guilty, facing a potential life sentence if convicted.
