Collins claims Schumer is aiming for her once more in the 2026 Maine Senate election.

Sen. Susan Collins Faces Challenge in Upcoming Election

HARRISON, Maine — Republican Senator Susan Collins is once again a key target for Democrats as she campaigns for a sixth term in the U.S. Senate, particularly for Maine, a state that leans left.

“I’ve been Chuck Schumer’s primary target not just in this campaign, but in the last two as well. I’ve always been at the top of his list,” Collins noted during an exclusive interview recently.

This cycle is no different as Collins aims for re-election in a highly competitive race set for 2026. This election could significantly influence whether Republicans maintain their narrow Senate majority.

Her likely opponent is Graham Platner, a military veteran and oyster farmer who seems poised to secure the Democratic nomination. Former two-term Governor Janet Mills, who had the backing of Schumer and the Democratic establishment, has recently fallen behind Platner in both fundraising and polling, ultimately withdrawing from the race.

Platner is backed by progressive figures like Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. The first-time candidate promotes economic populist policies, which aim to tackle corporate influence and support the working class.

When asked if Platner might be too far left for Maine voters, Collins replied, “I think that could be how they see it. But, of course, I can’t take anything for granted.”

Collins’s supporters have already launched advertisements criticizing Platner for past controversial comments on Reddit about women and rape, as well as for a tattoo resembling a Nazi symbol.

He had previously apologized after some of his Reddit posts gained attention shortly after announcing his Senate campaign. Platner explained that he got the skull and bones tattoo during a night out with fellow Marines in Croatia back in 2007. After learning last year about the tattoo’s resemblance to a Nazi emblem, he covered it up.

When asked if she would focus on Platner’s past controversies, Collins remarked, “Of course, I’m going to show a contrast between my accomplishments and his approach.”

Collins expressed a desire for a civil campaign, emphasizing the importance of discussing relevant issues. Platner, identifying as an outsider, argues that Collins represents a “broken Washington” and claims politicians like her have prioritized billionaire interests over the average citizen.

As the current ruling party faces difficulties—often resulting in fewer congressional seats—it’s compounded by ongoing inflation, an unpopular conflict with Iran, and rising gas prices, which contribute to negative perceptions of the GOP.

In response to concerns about living costs, Collins highlighted her support for the Low Income Heating Assistance Program, which aims to help struggling families stay warm during winter. She also noted the importance of food assistance programs, stating, “I oppose cuts to food stamp benefits since I understand how critical they are for low-income families.”

During her interview at a food bank that received federal funding she helped secure, Collins expressed satisfaction in contributing to its expansion, mentioning it serves over 1,000 families weekly.

The Democrats see a narrow path to regaining the Senate majority through Maine, where Collins is expected to face substantial ad campaigns again. She reminisced about the previous cycle when over $160 million was spent against her, filled with negative advertising and misrepresentations. Yet, she believes the people of Maine can discern the truth from fabricated narratives.
