The executives of the Washington Commanders are reportedly grappling with the need to reinstate the Redskins nickname, especially in light of recent pressures surrounding a stadium deal in D.C. It appears they’ve faced criticism from Trump, who has voiced his demands via social media, urging them to revert to their original name. Recently, owners Josh Harris and David Blitz conveyed concerns to business partners, indicating that the White House may exert some influence over the project planned for the former RFK Stadium site.
According to reports, this stadium will be situated on federal land that’s leased to the D.C. government for a long stretch, maybe about 99 years. The D.C. Council is gearing up to vote soon on a revised bill that would enable the Commanders to proceed with their stadium plans.
The entire project, which is expected to cost $3.7 billion, is set to receive approximately $2.7 billion in public funding alongside $1 billion more. There are rumored concerns that Trump could leverage his political influence to secure concessions if the Commanders don’t reconsider their name. Sources suggest that if they don’t act soon, Harris and Blitz might face increased pressure.
Trump has not been shy about targeting both the Commanders and the Cleveland Guardians over their team names, stating that the sentiment around the Redskins nickname has been overwhelmingly positive. He claimed that a deal for the new stadium hinges on the team returning to its previous name. Interestingly, Trump also encouraged parents to follow a related lawsuit.
In a more recent commentary, Trump compared the situation to Cleveland’s historical name changes, suggesting that those involved might benefit from going back to their roots, calling for a revival of the former name. He argued that heritage and legacy matter and asserted that the times have changed since the original name changes.
The D.C. Council is expected to vote on the updated stadium plan soon, and it’s unclear how the recent public discussions around the nickname will influence that decision. Harris has expressed a strong commitment to continuing with the current name, emphasizing the importance of the Commanders’ identity, particularly in a city with a significant military presence. He remains optimistic about moving forward without looking back.
