Outrage in Chicago Suburb Over Viral Video of Mother and Children Being Attacked

Residents in a Chicago suburb are calling for accountability after a video surfaced, showing a mother and her two children being assaulted by a group of school-aged kids. The incident has sparked significant community outrage.

Koshonda Hatter, 33, was attacked around 3 PM on Monday while walking along South Bensley Avenue in the South Deering area with her children, who were returning from Orville Bright Elementary School.

In the video, the group of children can be seen laughing and jeering at Hatter and her kids before cornering them near a chain-link fence. Hatter attempted to shield her children, but the attackers then proceeded to beat her, pulling her to the ground where she was kicked and punched.

Hatter and her son received medical treatment for injuries incurred during the altercation.

On Tuesday, a crowd gathered outside the school, demanding that the students involved be expelled. During an impromptu meeting, Hatter recounted her experience, saying, “I asked the kids to come with me next to the street so I wouldn’t be jumped.” She continued, “They followed us the whole time. Then they wrestled with my son and hit him first…”

Hatter met with school officials afterwards. Other parents expressed similar concerns, with one stating, “This has been going on in this community for so long, yet parents are not held accountable for their children’s actions.”

In a statement, Chicago Public Schools expressed dismay over the event, noting their collaboration with city departments to assist the victims. The statement included, “School administrators, teachers, and support staff work with students to create an open environment in which conflicts and grievances can be addressed.”

Mayor Brandon Johnson took to social media to express his distress, labeling the attack as “unacceptable.”

Hatter mentioned that her son has faced bullying from other students, emphasizing her desire for justice. In response, a supporter nearby affirmed, “And you deserve it!”

Currently, the Chicago Police Department has not made any arrests but has increased their presence at schools this week.
