Congressional Hispanic Caucus chair: Mass deportation plan will increase grocery costs

Rep. Nanette Díaz Barragan (D-Calif.), chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, said mass deportations could cause a spike in spending by American households, including at grocery stores.

President-elect Trump has repeatedly promised large-scale deportations of illegal immigrants, which could have a major impact on the workforce.

“And what we're seeing with mass deportations is that if you start deporting agricultural workers and people who have jobs that are essential to putting food on the table, it's going to cost American families even more money.” I think it's going to increase.'' It's only going to go up,'' Barragan said Wednesday afternoon. Appeared on MSNBC.

She shared concerns about President-elect Trump's plan, arguing that large groups of essential workers would disappear under the policy. Mass deportation efforts.

“They are also the ones providing care services to our loved ones. There is already a labor shortage, so there is a lot of negative impact on the economy, the human toll on families, and tearing families apart.” “I think it's having an impact,” she said.

“And I think it's going to be a real catastrophe that also erodes some of the trust that the community has in law enforcement.”

Barragan said Democrats have been unable to connect with voters this election cycle, despite opposing Trump and his approach to curbing inflation.

“I think there's a lot of work that we continue to have to do, which is to understand why Democrats are fighting for themselves and how they are fighting for working-class and middle-class families. “It starts with convincing people. Look at the Trump cabinet and the cabinet that's coming up,” she said.

“These are the billionaires, the wealthy, their friends, not the kind of people who care about working-class and middle-class families. And you know, right now, mass deportations are happening to the Latino community. It’s causing fear.”

President Trump has appointed former Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent Tom Homan to lead his administration's border security.
