Investigation into Elderly Couple’s Deaths in California
Authorities in California are treating the deaths of an elderly couple as a homicide following their discovery in their home on May 15th. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department reported that 80-year-old Donald Whitaker and his 79-year-old wife, Karen Whitaker, were found with what officials described as “traumatic injuries.”
Joy Meydecke, a friend of the Whitakers for over ten years, shared her thoughts with the media. She serves as the president of the East Valley Republican Women Patriots, which is how she came to know the couple.
Meydecke mentioned that Karen might have been targeted by an online scammer who impersonated actor Tom Selleck. They initially connected on Facebook, exchanging comments, which quickly escalated into daily messages.
Interestingly, Meydecke noted that Karen began communicating with the impersonator after commenting on a post about a deceased friend. This led to a secretive relationship that, according to Meydecke, took a troubling turn.
“He had a romance with her and told her all these things,” she said, referring to the interactions between Karen and the scammer.
Eventually, the situation became problematic, as the impersonator began to ask for money and monopolize Karen’s attention. Meydecke suspects that Karen transferred sums totaling in the hundreds of dollars to the con artist.
Concerned for her friend’s well-being, Meydecke reported the incident to Riverside County Adult Protective Services. They subsequently visited the Whitaker home, where Donald learned about his wife’s relationship with the scammer.
Check-ins from Donald appeared to have little effect on Karen, as Meydecke noted, “Her husband tried to talk to her, but she wouldn’t listen.” It’s deeply tragic, and there’s an unsettling cloud hanging over how it all unfolded.
As the investigation continues, the sheriff’s office has yet to identify any suspects or file any charges related to the case, though they are treating the couple’s deaths seriously.
