Manager Craig Albanaz Suffers Injuries but Stays with Team

Baltimore Orioles manager Craig Albanaz endured serious injuries, including seven fractures around his eye and a broken jaw, after being struck by a foul ball. Remarkably, he’s still been present in the dugout with his team.

There’s a noticeable change in his daily routine, though—he’ll be subsisting on baby food for the next six weeks as he recovers.

The incident took place during a game against the Arizona Diamondbacks when a foul ball veered toward the Orioles’ dugout, hitting Albanaz on the right side of his face. Just a day later, he was back at Camden Yards, demonstrating his resilience less than 24 hours after the incident.

Reports indicate that Albanaz has significant bruising on the right side of his face. Despite his injuries, he remains committed to supporting his team. “We’re here for the players. If I’m able to be here, then let’s go,” he told reporters. He even stated, “If my jaw was wired shut, I’d still be here.”

Albanaz expressed that he feels “pretty good” given the circumstances. He was struck by a ball hit from one of his players, Jeremiah Jackson. “The ball hit me pretty hard on the cheek,” he mentioned, adding, “Fortunately, I didn’t need surgery. I think I had at least seven fractures, but there’s no need for wires, just baby food for six weeks.”

Like many managers, Albanaz was positioned at the dugout steps when the ball was hit. This incident, while unfortunate, showcases his determination to stand by his team. They certainly showed support for him, coming back to win the game 9-7 after he was injured, largely thanks to Jackson’s impressive performance, which included two home runs.

Jackson reflected on the situation, saying, “I saw Albee holding his face. It was kind of depressing, but then learning that he was okay was a relief.”

Despite the challenges, the Orioles are now tied with the New York Yankees for first place in the AL East, holding a record of 9 wins and 7 losses.

Albanaz may have to alter his diet, but he remains dedicated to leading his team.
