Reports from journalists and political insiders have revealed that allegations of sexual misconduct against former California Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell have been a long-standing open secret, stirring feelings of surprise and outrage.
Swalwell was a leading candidate for governor of California until recently, but he saw his campaign unravel quickly due to serious allegations, including rape and sexual assault. He has since suspended his campaign, resigned from Congress, and acknowledged making a “mistake,” while denying the more severe claims.
Throughout his decade-long congressional career, particularly during Donald Trump’s presidency, Swalwell became a recognizable figure, often labeled as part of the “resistance.”
In a now-deleted post, Democratic strategist Michael Trujillo had previously cautioned about Swalwell’s past, stating, “I think Swalwell can enjoy today, but people know that he slept with many interns while married… You know you’ll have to answer for this later during the campaign, right?”
Following Trujillo’s warning, several women have come forward with allegations against Swalwell. The accusations include claims of drugging and raping a woman, as well as sexually assaulting a member of staff. Despite his denials, the focus has turned to those who were aware of his troubling behavior.
Swalwell had made numerous appearances on cable networks like CNN, which significantly boosted his profile. He was an ardent supporter of the claims regarding Russian interference and even ran for the presidency in 2020, heavily leveraging his media presence.
Trujillo mentioned that rumors about Swalwell had circulated as early as 2020, but once he withdrew from the presidential race, the drive to remove him seemed to diminish.
Cheyenne Hunt, a Democratic Gen Z activist who helped bring attention to the allegations through viral videos, mentioned that she had been hearing rumors surrounding Swalwell for years.
Politico noted that Swalwell’s reputation for “offensive and sometimes unwanted behavior” had been shared within insider circles but often went unacknowledged publicly. Many voices, like that of “The View” co-host Alyssa Farrar Griffin, highlighted that his inappropriate behavior around women was somewhat acknowledged within political circles.
As the allegations surfaced, journalist Yashar Ali pointed out that many Democrats were aware of the issues but remained silent. Others expressed disbelief at the juxtaposition of Swalwell’s rise in politics against a backdrop of accusations against him.
The Washington Post reported on how Swalwell’s rapid ascent in politics contrasted sharply with the persistent rumors surrounding him, raising questions about his earlier support from the party.
Once allies, now some are reflecting on how their long-term friendship with Swalwell may have clouded their judgment regarding the allegations.
Reporting on high-profile misconduct is challenging, especially in light of the difficulties women face when coming forward. In prior years, there were unverified claims against a California congressman, which were ultimately not made public. The conversation surrounding Swalwell’s actions has reignited discussions on the media’s role in covering such allegations, especially as many now claim they were aware of his behavior for years.
The situation reflects complexities in media reporting and political accountability, leaving observers to question how Swalwell’s behavior remained largely unaddressed until now.
