Crockett defends security guard who was killed during SWAT standoff, despite past criminal record

Security guard killed in Dallas police standoff involving SWAT team

Security Guard Killed in Standoff with Dallas Police

A man who served as a security guard for Rep. Jasmine Crockett from Texas was killed last week during a confrontation with SWAT. Authorities have charged him with impersonating a police officer, although the congresswoman has come to his defense, stating his criminal history doesn’t include any violent offenses.

The individual, Diamond Maazel Robinson, 39, was fatally shot by Dallas police after he barricaded himself in a vehicle located in a children’s hospital garage. This incident unfolded when police were searching for him due to an existing warrant.

Initially, officers deployed tear gas to force Robinson out of the car. He emerged from the vehicle and pointed a firearm at them, resulting in officers returning fire. Thankfully, no one on the police force was injured, and it’s reported that Robinson did not discharge his weapon.

Footage from police dashcams documenting the entire incident at Children’s Medical Center Dallas was made public on Monday.

Robinson had been accused of falsely representing himself as a law enforcement officer while promoting a business that hires off-duty police for security positions. He was known to drive a replica police vehicle adorned with stolen government plates and would often wear a counterfeit uniform, masquerading as a federal agent. During the investigation, officials recovered 11 firearms, including a stolen handgun he had at the time of the shootout.

Interestingly, he operated under the alias “Mike King” and did not use his real name. According to Deputy Chief William Griffiths of Dallas Police, there was no federal agency associated with the identity he displayed. He excelled at concealing his true identity and managed this for several years.

Robinson’s criminal background includes a range of offenses from theft to probation violations, with records tracing back to 2010. However, Crockett has expressed her shock regarding these developments, insisting that her office had found no indications of violent behavior in his past.

In her statement, she expressed sorrow over the unsettling discoveries and confirmed that her team followed proper protocols in hiring the security vendor, which had previously worked with local law enforcement and other organizations. She emphasized the critical need for rigorous vetting processes, especially concerning security arrangements involving Congress members.

This situation exemplifies potential vulnerabilities in the selection process for security roles, especially given the specific threats faced by congressional members. Crockett also acknowledged her disbelief in Robinson’s deceptive persona, asserting that he never endangered her team and had positive interactions within the community.

Reflecting on his death, she stated it stirred a complex mix of emotions, mourning the person they thought they knew and pondering the possibilities his life might have held. She concluded by reiterating that his past did not align with the individual they had come to trust.
