Debra Messing Calls Out Hypocrisy of Anti-Israel Activists

Actress Debra Messing has criticized anti-Israel activists for their silence on Iran, describing it as “the most audacious example of hypocrisy.” During a recent episode of the podcast “Jonah Pratt and Being Jewish,” she expressed her frustration over the lack of voice from pro-Palestinian supporters regarding Iran’s actions.

Messing’s remarks were a response to the events following the October 7 Hamas terrorist attack on Israel. She emphasized the inconsistency of activists who condemn Israel while ignoring the situation in Iran.

“I need to speak out,” Messing stated, explaining her resolve to engage in discussions surrounding geopolitical issues. She highlighted Iran specifically, pointing out the apparent disregard from those who typically protest against Israel.

“What’s going on in Iran?” she asked, indicating that many were aware of the deceptive scenarios playing out in that region. Her silence is, in her view, a glaring contradiction.

On reflecting her evolving views since the conflict escalation on October 7, she underscored the urgent need to protect Israel and its people. “We have no choice at all,” Messing asserted, illustrating her growing commitment to vocalize her support.

Messing also voiced her initial hopes for social media to be a tool for education and reform regarding Israel and its history. However, she quickly realized that her message faced significant resistance. The backlash she encountered when sharing her pro-Israel stance has been deeply hurtful.

“As soon as I start defending Israel and being a proud Jew, the comments I get are maddening and painful,” she reflected, noting the emotional toll it has taken. Messing recounted her childhood experiences, feeling unsafe to express her Jewish identity and learning to keep it hidden.

“I learned not to talk about being Jewish,” she said, expressing a lingering sense of insecurity. “I have never felt safe in my life.”
