Defense argues that evidence is missing in Iowa real estate agent murder case.

Attorneys for a woman accused of killing an Iowa real estate agent in 2011 are alleging that crucial evidence in the case was either lost or destroyed.

Christine Ramsey, 53, was charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Ashley Oakland, which occurred on April 8, 2011. Last month, Ramsey was arrested, adding a new chapter to this long-unsolved case that has lingered for about 15 years.

Recent court documents indicate that Ramsey’s defense claims key evidence was mishandled by law enforcement during the initial investigation.

The filing states, “The state has notified the defense that law enforcement has lost or destroyed evidence, case information, or both following Ms. Oakland’s death,” as noted by K.C.C.I.

Ramsey’s legal team is requesting all evidence related to the case, including contact information of those involved in the investigation. They are particularly interested in any evidence that may have been lost, altered, or disposed of.

Details about the specific evidence that may have been lost are still unclear.

Ashley Oakland was shot during an open house at a model townhome owned by Rotland Homes. Interestingly, Ramsey was employed by the same company at the time of the incident.

Authorities stated that Oakland suffered multiple gunshot wounds, including one to the chest and two to the face. After a prolonged investigation, Ramsey’s arrest was finally announced last month.

Witnesses reported hearing loud sounds on the day of the shooting and saw Ramsey outside shortly thereafter. It’s also noted that Ramsey called a colleague right after the incident but didn’t contact 911. In fact, a witness ended up calling 911 to report the shooting.

Prosecutors have mentioned that Ramsey provided inconsistent stories about her whereabouts on the day Oakland was killed during various interviews throughout the investigation.

Previous records indicate that during a search of Ramsey’s residence in May 2011, law enforcement found firearms, illegal drugs, and violent imagery. These items were reportedly located again in a follow-up search shortly before her recent arrest.

Ramsey has pleaded not guilty, and her defense is trying to have her bail reduced from $2 million to $100,000. As of now, authorities haven’t disclosed a potential motive for the murder.

Ramsey’s attorney has not responded to requests for comment.
