Senator Slotkin Addresses Absence During Israel Votes
Michigan Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin provided a detailed response on Thursday after missing significant votes on Israeli military aid to appear on Stephen Colbert’s show.
She skipped a number of votes on Wednesday, including two resolutions aimed at blocking further military support for Israel. Instead, she went to New York for her taping on the “Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” a decision that has drawn ire from many American voters.
In light of the reactions, Slotkin took time to clarify her stance on the votes and the reason for her absence. “I owe it to my state to make it clear where I stand,” she stated.
Slotkin mentioned, “Last night, I unfortunately missed a series of votes on two joint resolutions concerning disapproval of arms sales to Israel. I’ve really grappled with this issue more than with previous votes, especially since the Hamas attack on October 7. My constituency is diverse, with significant Arab, Muslim, and Jewish populations.”
She emphasized, “Therefore, I have worked hard to assess situations based on my experiences and the facts on the ground. Most individuals tend to align strongly with one perspective and are often hesitant to consider alternative viewpoints.”
Slotkin also reiterated her backing for Israel while expressing her concerns regarding Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s approach, saying it seems as if “there are no limits on what they can do while we support them.”
“I think we need to send a message,” Slotkin continued. “If similar votes regarding offensive weapons arise in the future, I will evaluate them individually, with the hope of fostering a humanitarian perspective. I will maintain my support for U.S.-Israel security relations and the sale of defensive measures like the Iron Dome.”
