Virginia Rep. Vindman Increases Support for Democratic Candidate Jay Jones
Democratic Representative Eugene Vindman from Virginia has significantly boosted his backing for fellow Democrat Jay Jones.
Vindman, who is relatively new to the legislature and missed a vote on condemning political violence last month, reiterated his endorsement for Jones in a post on social media platform X over the weekend. Notably, while some of his Democratic colleagues have criticized Jones for violent messages, Vindman has not called for any candidates to withdraw from the race.
“It’s time to send a message that our federation is tired of Republican confusion,” Vindman wrote on Sunday. He urged voters to back Virginia Democrats including @spanbergerforva, @senatorhashmi, and @jonesjay.
“Your voice this year is even more important,” he added.
Jones previously sent alarming messages in August 2022 to Republican Dell Carrie Coiner, indicating a desire to inflict harm on then-Speaker of the House Todd Gilbert. These messages reportedly included threats about Gilbert and his family.
Reports from a national review surfaced recently regarding these messages, and Jones has not disputed their authenticity.
Meghan Hayes, a former advisor under the Biden administration, criticized Democrats for their silence on Jones’ violent texts. “It’s abhorrent language. He should not be in the race, and Democrats are looking bad for not addressing this,” she stated.
Vindman participated in a campaign event with Jones earlier this year, an appearance noted on Jones’ endorsement page. A spokesperson for Vindman did not respond to requests for comment.
During a recent vote involving a resolution to commemorate Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk and to denounce political violence, Vindman was among 22 House Democrats who chose not to participate. This decision came during a time when many Democrats expressed disapproval of the resolution.
There has been no explanation from Vindman regarding his absence from that vote; however, he managed to cast a vote against a bipartisan spending bill shortly afterward.
The National Republican Congressional Committee criticized Vindman for his association with Jones. “The Democratic candidate in Virginia wants his children to die from gun violence, and Eugene Vindman’s response is to increase his support,” said NRCC spokesman Reilly Richardson.
Vindman has also voted against legislation aimed at tackling illegal immigration and prohibiting biological males from competing in women’s sports.
The nonpartisan Cook Political Report has classified his reelection bid for 2026 as “Lean Democrat.”
Vindman is the twin brother of Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vindman, known for his testimony during the first impeachment of Donald Trump in 2019. Reports have indicated that Eugene played a supportive role in his brother’s efforts to challenge the former president over a call with Ukraine.
Republican Jason Miyares, the current Virginia Attorney General and Jones’ opponent in the general election, has pointed to these violent threats as evidence that Jones is unfit for the position. “As Virginia’s top prosecutor, my job is to prevent violence. I can’t imagine anyone running this office who has advocated for it,” Miyares remarked.
