Federal Complaint Against New Jersey Rep. Lamonica McQuiver
New Jersey Representative Lamonica McQuiver has initiated a federal complaint this month concerning incidents at Delaney Hall, a civil-operated immigration and customs facility in Newark. The complaint alleges interference with law enforcement operations.
McQuiver expressed that, “You know, Trump is using his Justice Department to target political enemies. Just two weeks ago, I was at an ICE facility in my own city.” She described the situation as a troubling sign for democracy, calling for support to combat these allegations and maintain transparency.
According to investigative documents, McQuiver is accused of assaulting two federal agents at Delaney Hall. One of the alleged victims was an HSI agent, and the other an ICE officer.
Reports indicate that McQuiver reportedly attacked an agent by striking him with her forearm. Following the arrest of Mayor Rus Baraka, it’s claimed that McQuiver pushed an ICE officer, causing him to collide with the agent.
The documents detail further actions by McQuiver, where she allegedly created what was described as a “human shield,” defying multiple directives to vacate the area and blocking the arrest of Baraka.
When an HSI agent ordered Baraka to put his hands behind his back, McQuiver reportedly shouted in response, “Hell No! Hell No! Hell No!” This prompted prosecutors to assert that both McQuiver and others prevented the agent from handcuffing Baraka.
After the charges were announced, McQuiver shared her gratitude for the support she received and insisted that the truth would prevail in court. She stated that her actions during the inspection of the ICE detainees were within her rights as a council member, labeling the accusations as politically motivated attempts to mischaracterize her actions.
In a related note, Baraka faced federal trespassing charges that were ultimately dropped, although he affirmed his solidarity with McQuiver. His attorney pointed out that McQuiver’s actions are being scrutinized seriously, emphasizing that federal law enforcement duties must remain protected.
This unfolding situation illustrates a significant political battle in New Jersey, where deep-rooted tensions regarding immigration policies continue to surface within local governance.
