Democratic socialist Mamdani declines to support Israel as a Jewish state in NYC election

Mamdani’s Support for Palestinian BDS Movement Sparks Controversy

Zohran Mamdani, a candidate for mayor with a democratic socialist platform, expressed his strong support for the Palestinian-led BDS movement during a recent event in New York. He described it as a “legal movement” while dodging questions about Israel’s status as a Jewish state.

During the Q&A session hosted by the UJA Federation, Mamdani made it clear that his support for BDS aligns with his commitment to non-violence. “I think it’s a legitimate move when you’re trying to find compliance with international law,” he stated. He believes that tactics like boycotts and sanctions can effectively encourage compliance both at the state and individual levels.

While Mamdani acknowledged that he believes Israel has the right to exist, he avoided a definitive stance on its existence as a Jewish nation. “Everyone has the right to exist with equal rights,” he commented, although it was apparent he was treading carefully on the topic.

His comments come amid growing scrutiny; recently unearthed social media videos showed him leading a pro-Palestinian chant during an anti-Israel protest. Despite this criticism, event attendees seemed to greet him warmly.

Mixed sentiments surrounded his event, especially given the timing, as it occurred shortly after a tragic incident involving the shooting of two individuals associated with the Israeli embassy in Washington, D.C. Attendees described security at the gathering as “wild,” with significant restrictions in place.

When questioned about remarks suggesting he had been ordered by the elected mayor to be arrested if Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu were to visit New York, Mamdani reiterated his stance. “My position is that our cities should comply with international law,” he emphasized, referencing a warrant from the International Criminal Court concerning Israeli leaders.

Mamdani’s campaign spokesperson maintained that the candidate’s beliefs about Israel remain consistent, emphasizing both the right of Israel to exist and the importance of complying with international standards.

Despite facing backlash, Mamdani’s momentum in the mayoral race seems to persist, particularly after gaining support from prominent figures who previously criticized the Israeli government. It’s a complex landscape, where support for universal rights intersects with a contentious political issue.
