Devin Booker Voiced Frustration After Technical Foul
Devin Booker was quite vocal after a frustrating game on Wednesday night.
The Phoenix Suns player was understandably upset when he received a technical foul in the third quarter during a 120-107 defeat against the Oklahoma City Thunder. The call left fans and commentators scratching their heads, especially since it put the Suns in a challenging 2-0 position in the series.
In attempting to keep the ball in play, Booker accidentally made contact with Oklahoma City’s Jaylin Williams, which led to the unexpected technical foul.
Booker expressed his belief that Thunder player Alex Caruso influenced the referee’s decision regarding the technical foul. “It’s definitely something we’ll have to look at. I heard Caruso tell him to call the technician, which he did,” Booker reflected after the match. “For 11 years, I’ve never directly addressed a referee by name, but James [Williams] was awful tonight from start to finish. That hurts the game’s integrity. If there’s no accountability, people might start to compare it to WWE.”
Caruso seemed to be vocal as the referee indicated the technical foul, which only added to the confusion.
The ESPN commentary team was also perplexed by the foul call. “Are they really calling that? Booker was just trying to save the ball, and it hit Jay Williams. How is that a technical foul?” questioned commentator Dave Pash. Analyst Doris Burke agreed, adding, “Why is that a tech?”
Booker’s frustrations didn’t end there. He noted, “I know we haven’t won a championship, but we’ve been competing in this league for 11 years. To be treated this way—it’s just unacceptable.”
Teammate Dillon Brooks echoed the sentiment, suggesting that officials should be interviewed instead of players, although there are strict guidelines around those conversations.
After the game, lines of debate emerged on social media regarding the officiating. The Thunder, currently the top seed in the West and the defending champions, managed to take 48 free throws during the series, outpacing the Suns’ 40.
Notably, Thunder player Chet Holmgren was accused of drawing fouls unfairly by exaggerating contact. Amidst this, Booker seemed to struggle for similar calls early in the match.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Thunder has faced his share of criticism, with discussions surrounding his actions affecting the sport. Observations made by prominent figures, such as Bill Simmons, reflected on how certain tactics might detract from the authentic essence of basketball, a sentiment that resonates with other players as well.
