DHS Responds to Criticism from Democratic Lawmakers

This past weekend, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) countered claims made by several Democratic lawmakers about ICE’s focus on illegal immigrants. They argued that these lawmakers are being misled by political rhetoric.

Senator Dick Durbin, a Democrat from Illinois, led the charge, stating that Illinois Democrats had previously criticized DHS for claiming it targeted only the most dangerous offenders during what they termed Operation Midway Blitz.

DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin emphasized the need to correct misleading information, asserting that the agency actively seeks out illegal immigrants convicted of severe crimes, such as child sexual assault and drug trafficking. She stated, “While Democratic politicians try to mislead the public about Homeland Security’s enforcement targets, our dedicated ICE agents are putting their lives on the line to protect innocent families from pedophiles and violent criminals.”

McLaughlin detailed some of the most serious offenders apprehended recently, including Cristian Mendivil Diaz, a Mexican national found guilty of aggravated assault against a child in Illinois, and Liam Sun, a Burmese national arrested in North Carolina for indecent acts involving a child.

Among other arrests were Salvadoran Guillermo Guevara Serrano, convicted of assault against a minor, and Orville C. Weir from Jamaica, apprehended after being convicted of lewd acts with a minor in Florida. Additionally, federal authorities took Andre Lubala, a Congolese immigrant, into custody for aggravated assault.

In response, the Illinois Democratic Party branded DHS’s narrative as a “misinformation campaign.” Senator Durbin criticized the Trump administration for spreading “outright lies” regarding enforcement actions in the state. He painted a troubling picture, claiming that the treatment of residents included the use of tear gas and excessive force.

Representative Delia Ramirez, part of the “Squad,” accused DHS officials of lying and manipulating information to cover up illicit activities. She expressed pride in collaborating with colleagues to address the injustices inflicted by ICE and Customs and Border Protection on communities.

Representative Jesús García from Illinois shared his concerns, stating that the presence of federal agents in his neighborhood has instilled fear among residents, including his own grandson. “People are being detained and disappearing,” he revealed.

Similarly, Rep. Bill Foster criticized ICE operations in Chicago, describing them as anything but law enforcement. He remarked that federal agents have used intimidation and violence against peaceful communities, reflecting what he termed a campaign of fear initiated during the Trump era.

Rep. Lauren Underwood reiterated these sentiments, condemning DHS for perpetuating fear and violating constitutional rights in their operations.
