Department of Homeland Security Criticizes NYC Officials

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) expressed strong criticism on social media towards New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul for their perceived inaction regarding public safety. The DHS claims that over 16,000 illegal migrant criminals have been allowed to remain at large.

In a post made on Monday, DHS stated, “We enforce these laws with no help from Mayor Mamdani and Governor Hochul.” They highlighted that from January 20, 2025, to October 8, 2026, New York has not honored 16,070 ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) detainers, resulting in 52,503 criminal charges and convictions related to those detainers being disregarded. The agency reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Americans and vowed not to let “sanctuary politicians” obstruct their efforts.

Just the previous week, DHS indicated that New York had declined to honor 14,766 detainers sent by ICE. Now, that figure has escalated to 16,070.

DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin commented, “While sanctuary politicians continue to release dangerous criminals onto their streets, our brave law enforcement officers will continue to risk their lives to apprehend these criminals and make America safe again. Illegal aliens have no sanctuary in America.”

Mullin reiterated the challenges posed by sanctuary policies, stating that the Trump Administration is resolute in its protection of citizens across every city and state. The controversies surrounding sanctuary jurisdictions have fueled ongoing disputes as DHS accuses them of failing to cooperate with federal efforts to detain dangerous offenders.

In March, DHS pointed out that several sanctuary cities and states nationwide had rejected an additional 18,000 detainers, which were aimed at apprehending serious offenders. Earlier this year, it was reported that in California, 4,500 migrants convicted of serious crimes, including murder and sexual assault, were released without ICE detainers being honored.
