DHS Holds Democrats Responsible for Restrictions on Disaster Aid Due to Shutdown

Homeland Security Takes Emergency Measures Amid Funding Shortfalls

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced on Sunday that it is implementing steps to conserve “funds and personnel” in light of federal funding shortages, raising concerns over national security and public safety.

Several DHS agencies, including the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), are activating “emergency measures” due to the ongoing partial government shutdown. Secretary Kristi Noem criticized Congressional Democrats for prioritizing politics over public safety.

“This is the third time during the current Congress that Democratic politicians have shut down this department,” Noem stated. “The shutdown not only affects the dedicated workers of DHS, who are currently working without pay, but it also poses risks to national security. Americans rely on this department every day, and we are making difficult but necessary decisions regarding staffing and resources to lessen the impact of this political decision.”

Noem pointed out that while Democratic politicians receive their salaries, TSA workers are currently not getting paid. She emphasized that all TSA officers arriving that day had yet to receive their paychecks. “The TSA workforce is making significant efforts,” she noted.

In light of the shutdown, Noem explained that TSA and CBP will focus on regular travelers at airports and entry points, halting ceremonial and special privilege escorts. FEMA, meanwhile, is suspending non-disaster responses to focus on actual disasters, particularly with another major winter storm predicted to affect the mid-Atlantic and northeastern United States soon.

In the political sphere, Democrats have been advocating for new restrictions on U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after the shooting deaths of Alex Preti and Renee Nicole Good during a recent operation in Minnesota aimed at addressing welfare fraud related to Somali immigrants.

This funding measure limits FEMA’s public assistance to only “new or recent disasters that require immediate emergency action” and suspends all other efforts that don’t address immediate threats.

TSA will also cease “ceremonial escorts” for individuals, including members of Congress, while ensuring that security is not compromised. CBP will be suspending the Global Entry program along with other courtesies afforded to senators and House members during the shutdown period.

In her remarks, Noem reiterated that congressional Democrats are receiving their pay while not funding necessary services. “This political struggle is hurting TSA workers and their families. If you see a TSA agent today, please take a moment to thank them,” she urged.
