Protests Erupt in Brooklyn Over ICE Arrest
Over the weekend, nearly ten people were arrested in New York during protests against ICE’s actions aimed at detaining undocumented immigrants. This unrest was sparked by the arrest of Chidozie Wilson Okeke, an undocumented individual from Nigeria, who has a record that includes assault and drug-related offenses, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Okeke, who entered the U.S. on a tourist visa in 2023, has since overstayed—he’s supposed to leave by February 26, 2024. Reports state that during an immigration raid on Saturday, he resisted ICE officers, attempting to hit them with his car before allegedly becoming “physically belligerent” and attempting to punch an officer.
DHS maintains that their officers adhered to protocol and employed minimal force in this situation.
After his arrest, Okeke was taken to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center for evaluation, where he reportedly did not comply with medical staff, causing a scene before eventually being cleared. There’s footage of ICE officers forcibly escorting him from the hospital following the assessment.
A gathering of anti-ICE demonstrators formed outside the hospital during this time. According to DHS, some protesters vandalized ICE vehicles and assaulted officers, which resulted in minor injuries.
The NYPD noted that around 10:25 p.m. on Saturday, they received reports about disorderly protests outside the hospital. Officers found numerous people blocking traffic and emergency entrances. They issued multiple warnings to clear the area.
Ultimately, nine protesters were detained; eight faced charges including resisting arrest and obstruction of public administration, while one received a summons and was released.
The NYPD clarified that they do not engage in immigration enforcement and were unaware of ICE’s operation ahead of time.
In the aftermath, New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani expressed his views on ICE raids, labeling them as “brutal and inhumane” and claiming they fail to enhance public safety, a sentiment he has reportedly shared with the president directly.
