New Wave of ICE Arrests Highlighted by Homeland Security Secretary

In a recent statement to Fox News Digital, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem emphasized that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is actively arresting illegal immigrants who are involved in criminal activities, despite facing significant resistance from what she called “sanctuary politicians.” She accused these individuals of obstructing law enforcement efforts.

Noem noted that, over the past year, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has successfully removed more than 670,000 illegal immigrants. This group includes individuals with serious criminal backgrounds such as murderers and gang members. “Recently, ICE apprehended a pedophile and a domestic abuser,” she stated, adding, “The increasing number of arrests by DHS leads to a rise in voluntary deportations, currently surpassing 2 million. This is just the beginning of what I call America’s Golden Age.”

DHS Calls for Support from Leaders Regarding ICE Detention Practices

Noem’s announcement came alongside a new series of arrests involving individuals convicted of severe offenses, including child molestation and drug trafficking. For instance, Uriel Hernandez-Betancourt, an illegal immigrant from Mexico, was apprehended by ICE after being convicted of indecent assault on a child in North Carolina. Similarly, Parede Zuniga, a Guatemalan national with a previous cocaine distribution conviction, was also arrested by federal agents.

Criticism and Responses Surrounding Immigration Enforcement

Democrats have criticized the current administration, alleging that immigrants with no criminal records are being arrested. However, the DHS countered that about 70% of those apprehended by ICE do have criminal convictions or pending charges. Yet, there’s a level of uncertainty regarding the 30% without such records, as it’s unclear how many might have outstanding warrants from their home countries or internationally.

For example, Lucio Valdovinos, another illegal immigrant from Mexico, had multiple convictions for DUI and disorderly conduct across California. Lorenzo Aviles-Macedo, also from Mexico, faced charges for domestic violence and DUI.

On the other hand, in a recent appearance on Fox News’ “Special Report,” Senator Mark Warner from Virginia claimed that about 75% of immigrants arrested by ICE in his state have no criminal history. He acknowledged the complexities of these arrests, mentioning how the Biden administration has struggled with border control, leading to issues such as children being left unattended when their parents are apprehended.

This ongoing situation seems not only contentious but also illustrative of the broader immigration debate taking place in the United States today.
