DHS Announces New Immigration Detention Facility in Nebraska
On Tuesday, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) revealed plans to set up an immigration detention facility in Nebraska, amid President Trump’s efforts to reinforce Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations.
The facility, located in the southwest region of Nebraska, is referred to as “Cornhusker Klink.” It will be used to detain “illegal criminal aliens” apprehended by ICE, as indicated in a press release. This center is a result of a collaboration between the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services and ICE, creating room for an additional 280 beds.
The existing facility is a minimum-security prison work camp situated approximately 210 miles west of Lincoln.
“Today marks the announcement of a new partnership with Nebraska, allowing us to expand our detention space by 280 beds,” stated DHS Director Christa Noem. “We appreciate Governor Pillen’s assistance in addressing issues related to illegal immigration. If you’re in the country illegally, you could find yourself at Cornhusker Klink. It’s crucial to avoid arrests by utilizing the CBP Home app.”
The administration continues to develop detention centers nationwide to hold immigrants detained by various agencies. Recently, DHS opened the “Alligator Alcatraz” in the Florida Everglades and is also setting up a facility in East Montana, El Paso, Texas. Additionally, they plan to accommodate up to 1,000 immigrants at Indiana’s “Speedway Slammer” detention facility.
Nebraska Governor Jim Piren announced on Tuesday that the Nebraska National Guard will offer “administrative and logistical” assistance to ICE personnel stationed in the state to enforce immigration regulations. DHS mentioned that around 20 Army National Guard members will participate in this initiative, with training set to commence next week.
“We take pride in supporting Nebraska’s enforcement efforts alongside the National Guard,” Pillen said. “Homeland security begins locally, and Nebraska will continue to fulfill its role, just as it did when troops were deployed twice to secure the southern border during the previous administration.”
