After Joe Kent’s Resignation, Trump Responds Strongly
Following Joe Kent’s resignation from his position as director of the National Counterterrorism Center on Tuesday, President Donald Trump and his supporters reacted with intensity.
Kent’s resignation came as a surprise, conveyed in a letter to Trump, where he expressed his concerns regarding U.S. military actions in Iran. He stated that Iran was “not an imminent threat” and suggested that American involvement had largely been coerced on behalf of Israel, a claim that sparked backlash from the administration.
“He had strong and convincing evidence that Iran was going to attack,” he noted in his letter, identifying himself as an 11-time combat veteran and a Gold Star husband who lost his wife, Shannon, in a conflict he attributed to Israeli interests. Kent argued against sending future generations into unnecessary wars, deeming the human and financial costs unjustifiable.
This unexpected resignation sent shockwaves through the already divided MAGA community, despite the overflow of support Kent received from some quarters. There was palpable disapproval from Trump and anti-war proponents, however.
Trump remarked on Kent’s resignation, stating, “I always thought he was a good person, but I considered him weak on national security.” In a comment made in the Oval Office, he indicated that Kent’s view of Iran as a non-threat reinforced his belief that Kent’s departure was ultimately beneficial.
White House press secretary Caroline Levitt issued a more pointed rebuttal to Kent’s assertions, labeling several of his claims as false. “As President Trump has stated, there was compelling evidence that Iran intended to attack the U.S. first,” she asserted, pushing back against Kent’s argument that Iran posed no immediate danger.
Levitt continued, referencing Iran’s history of supporting terrorism and pursuing nuclear ambitions, while dismissing Kent’s claim about Israeli coercion as “insulting and ridiculous.” She concluded by defending Trump’s track record, emphasizing his consistent stance on preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
