Trump Comments on LIV Golf Situation
Former President Donald Trump has shared his thoughts on the current situation surrounding LIV Golf, especially after the Saudi Public Investment Fund halted its financial support for the league.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump expressed a desire to see the biggest names in golf compete against each other, stating that it would benefit the sport. He remarked, “I think all golfers should play against one another. They thought there was a monopoly, but that’s being challenged. It really should be the opposite of a monopoly.” He also mentioned players he would like to see face off, like Rory McIlroy against Bryson DeChambeau, and how thrilling it would be to watch Jon Rahm compete with Scottie Scheffler.
Trump pointed out that fans enjoy seeing top players together, highlighting how the Masters was so successful for that very reason. He, personally a fan of golf, previously welcomed PGA Tour leaders alongside former LIV Golf Chairman Yasir Al-Rumayan at the White House last year. He predicted that LIV golfers would eventually be welcomed back into the PGA Tour because of their talent.
“There’s something positive about all the players playing together,” he said. “This will allow them to integrate into the tour. Without a doubt, they’re incredible talents.” He further noted the importance of the tour having the best players, suggesting the current situation might be somewhat restrictive.
Moreover, LIV announced that it is actively searching for a long-term financial partner to sustain its operations past 2026. This development could influence players’ decisions regarding returning to the PGA Tour.
A recent report from Golf Digest indicated that several players from LIV Golf have already reached out to PGA Tour officials to discuss their potential return. However, the specifics on which golfers were involved remain undisclosed.
Given the number of golfers who moved to LIV in 2022, re-entering the PGA Tour might prove challenging, with the possibility of the tour introducing obstacles that complicate their return.
