On Friday, UN Aid Director Tom Fletcher emphasized that suggestions for alternative methods of providing aid to Gaza should not be disregarded. He mentioned, “For those proposing alternative modalities for the distribution of aid, don’t waste time. We’re already planning,” as Israel has prevented humanitarian aid from reaching Gaza for the past 75 days.
US President Donald Trump highlighted the dire situation, stating, “many people are hungry for Gaza.” Global hunger monitors have raised alarms about half a million individuals in the area facing starvation, which represents about 25% of Gaza’s population.
Israel has accused Hamas, the Palestinian extremist group, of misappropriating aid, a claim that Hamas denies. As part of a critical alternative aid initiative, the US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation hopes to commence operations in Gaza by the end of May.
They plan to collaborate with US private security and logistics firms to facilitate the transportation of aid to Gaza, although details regarding funding are unclear.
The United Nations has refrained from collaborating with the foundation, stating that its distribution approach lacks fairness and neutrality. Fletcher provided an update on the UN’s efforts to resume aid to Gaza, indicating that roughly 9,000 trucks are prepared to enter the area.
“We have people, distribution networks, and trust within the community, and we’re ready to move 160,000 pallets of aid. We demand prompt, safe, and unhindered assistance for civilians in need. Let us work,” he stated.
The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation has requested that Israel permit humanitarian deliveries by the UN and aid organizations to continue until their own infrastructure is fully operational, deeming this vital for easing ongoing humanitarian distress.
A source familiar with the situation mentioned that Israel is committed to facilitating the foundation’s operations to ensure that aid delivery can resume soon. However, Israel’s UN mission in New York declined to comment on the matter.
According to the Israeli count, the conflict in Gaza was ignited on October 7, 2023, when Hamas killed 1,200 individuals and took approximately 250 hostages in southern Israel. The military response from Israel has resulted in over 53,000 Palestinian deaths, as reported by Gaza Health Authorities.
