Understanding God: A Personal Journey

At the core of Christianity lies a profound truth: God is not just a distant figure, but rather a personal being intimately involved in the lives of those who seek Him. This conviction has been central to Dr. Gerald Robison’s career as a pastor and author, influencing his writings and his mission to help people experience God in ways that are genuine and relatable.

“Jesus Christ reminds us that faith is about relationships rather than just following rules. It’s about love, grace, and deepening our understanding of God and our place in His plan,” Gerald shares.

Robison, who has written close to 17 books on faith, aspires to make the understanding of God accessible and personal. “I’m just a regular person speaking in everyday language,” he asserts, emphasizing that his approach is not rooted in complex theology but rather in fostering a closer connection with God.

His journey in ministry spans over 55 years, during which he has built churches and served as a pastor across three continents. He spent time in places like Australia and the Netherlands, traveling through Europe to spread his message. Significant portions of his early education were shaped by experiences in the Middle East, which profoundly influenced his faith.

Over the years, Robison discovered where his true joy lies. “What I enjoy most is helping people grasp God and His Word in a relatable manner,” he explains. He finds that using humor in his teachings resonates well with audiences, as laughter often leaves a lasting impression.

In fact, Robison used to lead nearly 50 seminars annually. “I like to find out what people are interested in,” he mentions. “Then I can meet them there.” His favorite topics often revolve around the nature of God, the idea of eternity, and simple explanations of life and faith.

This rhythm changed dramatically with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Shortly after, Robison faced personal struggles when he was diagnosed with tongue cancer, enduring its effects for about two years. This ordeal shifted his perspective on life.

“It transformed how I perceive time,” he reflects. “Not in a negative sense, but in a way that helps me focus on what really matters.” His challenges have not diminished his commitment to sharing his message, though. “I’ve never turned down a speaking opportunity unless I was unwell or had other commitments,” he adds, noting that this hasn’t changed.

His battle with cancer spurred him into writing, resulting in works like 30 Seconds That Will Change Your Life, which underscores the significance of appreciating the small moments in life. “When I was diagnosed, my wife asked what I wanted for Christmas, and I said I wanted a clock that would count down my time here. It might sound morbid, but it actually reminds me to focus on what truly matters,” Gerald asserts.

He intentionally keeps his teaching style straightforward. Avoiding heavy jargon, he aims to communicate in a way that feels genuine. “When folks hear ‘theology,’ they often think of complicated stuff—like math or science. I prefer to keep it simple so that the message reaches the heart rather than just the intellect,” he notes.

This philosophy is reflected in his book Dog and Cat Theology, which employs the behaviors of cats and dogs as analogies to help readers reevaluate their priorities and their relationship with God. “It’s about seeing things from a different angle,” he explains, emphasizing the importance of recognizing what truly counts and understanding God’s purpose more clearly.

Subsequently, he also authored Cat and Dog Prayer, focusing on how to pray and communicate with God. He has even put together a 15-book series titled Because He Liked It, where each volume highlights a different animal and explains why that creature was created as it is, appealing to both children and adults. “This helps illustrate God’s creativity in ways that feel closer to everyday life,” he remarks.

Ultimately, all of Robison’s work aims at one clear goal: “I want people to grasp God on a heart level,” he expresses. He hopes that readers will leave with a new perspective and a stronger desire to connect with God.

Looking ahead, his intentions remain humble and steady. He aims to keep writing, teaching, and growing in his faith, and most importantly, he wants to share that journey with others. “As I deepen my understanding of God, I want to assist others in doing the same,” he shares.
