Driving on the Fourth of July? What you can expect to pay for gas

Motorists filling up their tanks on the Fourth of July will see the lowest holiday gas prices in three years, according to a research firm. Tuesday Forecast From GasBuddy.

The company predicted that people nationwide will have to pay an average of $3.49 per gallon of gasoline on the Fourth of July, which falls on a Thursday this year.

“Gas prices have fluctuated moderately recently as people head out to celebrate the Fourth of July, but in most states prices remain the same or significantly lower than a year ago,” said Patrick de Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.

According to GasBuddy, this year’s July 4 forecast calls for a 1-cent drop from 2023, and a drop of more than $1.30 compared to the year before.

As of late Wednesday afternoon, the national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline was about $3.507, the company said.

“While the first half of the summer has been relatively smooth, the road ahead may be difficult,” de Haan also said Tuesday. “We are seeing increased tropical activity and continue to expect a very busy hurricane season. Even after the holiday fireworks are over, we’ll be keeping an eye on the possibility of fireworks at gas stations due to hurricanes that disrupt refineries.”

According to the US National Hurricane Center, the Atlantic hurricane season began on June 1, with the first hurricane, Beryl, currently moving through the Caribbean Sea.

Gas prices aren’t expected to hurt as much this Fourth of July as they have in years past, but that’s not going to be the case for Thursday’s barbecues.
