Democratic Socialists Propose Sweeping Changes to U.S. Political System
House Democrats seemed a bit taken aback when asked about a bold new initiative from the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). This plan, which aims to overhaul the American political framework, advocates for abolishing the Senate, the presidency, and the Supreme Court altogether.
Rep. Ro Khanna from California responded rather directly, stating, “I don’t support it. I haven’t read the proposal,” when questioned about the DSA’s agenda.
The DSA’s updated platform, titled “Workers Have More Rights,” suggests replacing the current Senate and president with a new executive and judicial branch that would be elected by Congress, placing them under its authority.
Socialist Influence Growing in the Democratic Party
Rep. Ilhan Omar, recognized as one of the more progressive voices in Congress, avoided answering questions regarding the new socialist policies. Meanwhile, Rep. Pete Aguilar, also from California, mentioned that he is not a DSA member and therefore could not comment on their recent documents.
The plan’s political commitments consist of three key sections, with the final one advocating for a single-chamber parliament (essentially abolishing the Senate) and a parliamentary system that would eliminate the role of president.
In addition, the DSA’s platform calls for dismantling U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), granting amnesty to all immigrants—including those with criminal records—and even defunding the Army.
This radical agenda follows a trend where several DSA candidates and self-identified socialists have successfully defeated more centrist Democrats in recent primaries, indicating a potential normalization of socialist views within the Democratic Party.
Aguilar assured that he’s not stressed about this surge of far-left candidates affecting Democratic policies, expressing optimism about working with all fellow Democrats.
Formal Endorsements for Socialist Candidates
The DSA articulated the formal prerequisites for socialism-leaning candidates to gain its endorsement in a statement released Friday in their journal, Democratic Left. The initiative “Workers Deserve More” is set to play an official role in the candidate endorsement process within the DSA.
The expectation is that candidates seeking DSA support will actively promote its agenda and align their campaign platforms accordingly, which indicates that the DSA’s goals are framed more as actionable plans rather than just theoretical ideals, even if some House Democrats like Omar, Khanna, and Aguilar have not fully engaged with the proposal or prefer not to comment.
