Sheeran Addresses Gaza Conflict at Concert

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Ed Sheeran opened his concert on Saturday with remarks about Gaza following some controversy surrounding his tour. This came after supporting acts withdrew in solidarity with Macklemore, who was dropped from the tour for making pro-Palestinian comments during a performance.

Initially taking the stage alone, Sheeran eventually welcomed other musicians to join him later in the evening.

He expressed his wish for his music and shows to promote unity and humanity, steering clear of politics. However, he described the attacks in Israel on October 7, 2023, as horrific and characterized the situation in Gaza as “catastrophic and unjustifiable.”

“I don’t want to disappoint fans,” he said, adding that he never intended to be an activist musician, but felt compelled to address an important and passionate discourse regarding freedom of speech amid a complex global political issue.

These comments were made to an almost full stadium after a week of turmoil that began when rapper Macklemore, initially slated as the opener, faced removal from the lineup for declaring “Free Palestine” at a show in New Jersey.

Sheeran clarified that he was not behind the decision, which had been influenced by New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, whose stadium was scheduled to host Sheeran’s concert.

Following Sheeran’s remarks, his supporting acts quickly exited the tour.

While he often performs solo during his Loop Tour concerts, he was joined by the Irish band Beoga for several songs before they too backed out in support of Macklemore. Macklemore was replaced by Lukas Graham and Aaron Rowe, but both bands later withdrew. Finneas, known for his collaboration with Billie Eilish, was also set to join Sheeran’s South American leg but stepped back after the controversy.

Outside the stadium on Saturday, a small group of pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered. Hillary Steinberg, a 34-year-old concertgoer who ultimately opted to attend the demonstration after securing a refund, expressed disappointment in Sheeran for not taking a clearer stand.

“I was, until this week, a big Ed Sheeran fan,” Steinberg reflected. “I think all art is political, and all music is political, so his choice—though he claims he wasn’t complicit—carries political weight.”

Meanwhile, Diane Savitz, 53, who attended the concert, defended Sheeran, believing a concert should be about enjoying the music. “A concert should be for people enjoying the music. Music should bring people together,” she said, adding that while everyone has the right to express their views, the concert wasn’t the right venue for that.

Macklemore announced recently that he would donate $1 million to Palestinian relief and called on Kraft to match that donation. A spokesperson for Kraft stated that both he and Sheeran plan to contribute $2 million, although the specific allocation of these funds remains unclear. Sheeran’s team has not responded to requests for further comments.

Sheeran has been recognized as a major figure in the concert industry, landing among the top-earning acts according to Pollstar. He insisted earlier this week that he didn’t want to engage in discussions about the war in Gaza, believing his fans attend his shows to enjoy music, not to discuss political issues.

He emphasized that he had communicated with venues extensively to find a resolution before Macklemore’s exit. Sheeran remained adamant about his commitment to his fans and the touring crew who depend on him for their livelihood.

Despite the powerful influence that promoters and venues have over concert tours, experts assert that artists of Sheeran’s caliber typically maintain significant control over such decisions. During his Philadelphia concert, Sheeran affirmed that everyone is welcome and can have differing opinions while enjoying his music, which he described as centered on “love, hope, and unity.”

He expressed concerns regarding venues pre-approving performances, remarking, “This happens in so many places that I perform around the world, but it should never happen in the free world.”
