Educator put on leave for allegedly threatening to notify ICE about middle school students, according to the district.

A parent of a 12-year-old attending Rayburn Middle School in San Antonio, Texas, shared that her son messaged her asking to be picked up due to concerning remarks made by a teacher.

The Northside Independent School District is currently looking into allegations that a teacher made threats to call immigration enforcement and local police about certain students.

A spokesperson from the district, Barry Perez, highlighted the seriousness of this situation, stating that the substitute teacher involved has been suspended from all duties while the investigation unfolds.

An October 6 report from a student indicated that the substitute, whose name hasn’t been disclosed, threatened disruptive students by mentioning Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Following the report, the district confirmed the teacher’s suspension while they assess the claims, as Perez communicated during a conversation with KSAT-TV.

According to district records, this substitute teacher was hired in August 2024 and there had, reportedly, been no prior complaints lodged against them.

A mother, Amanda San Miguel, recounted receiving a text from her son during the school day. He informed her about the substitute’s threats of contacting police and ICE.

“He was really scared. He reached out for an early pickup, and I initially asked him what was wrong, thinking he just wanted to come home,” she explained.

After some concern, she later received a call from the principal confirming the incident. “Hearing it was true made my heart sink. I thought, ‘I need to get to the school right away,’” she said.

She expressed her anger regarding the incident, feeling it was completely unacceptable.

According to Perez, campus authorities acted swiftly to remove the substitute while the investigation commenced. Additionally, he noted that they had communicated with the student’s family.

The district reiterated its serious stance on the matter, with plans to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the events.
