Teacher Calls for Exclusion of MAGA Educators
A teacher in California sparked debate after posting a video on TikTok in January, advocating for a hiring “oath” that would exclude educators who support former President Donald Trump.
Noel Carney Campbell, who was honored as the Teacher of the Year by the Santa Ana Unified School District, shared her thoughts in a newspaper on January 27. In her social media post, she expressed concern over “MAGA teachers,” suggesting that they negatively impact their students. Carney Campbell had also displayed a modified version of the “Pride” flag in her classroom.
“I’ve been thinking a lot about this for years,” Carney Campbell mentioned in her video. “Why are there so many MAGA teachers? Just saying those words together makes me a bit nauseous.” She noted that, although teaching can be a calling for many dedicated individuals, it’s distinct from professions like medicine, where an oath is taken to prioritize patient welfare. “We don’t have an oath to safeguard our students,” she added.
She went on to say, “Unfortunately, I think that’s why there are some pretty apathetic and selfish individuals in this field. MAGA teachers are very vocal about their beliefs and, surprisingly, some work in communities where their views clash significantly with the values of the students.” She expressed a strong belief that students deserve better and questioned whether the issues surrounding this could ever be effectively addressed without a more profound commitment to their well-being.
Carney Campbell, known for her liberal activism shared through her TikTok and Instagram accounts, once described her attempts to “dress as LGBTQ+ as possible” while soliciting fashion advice.
“It’s really embarrassing to be a MAGA teacher,” she stated emphatically, highlighting her sentiments regarding educators with conservative views.
