Efforts to Raise Funds for Joe Biden's Presidential Library Encounter Significant Hurdles from Hesitant Democratic Donors

Delaware Selected for Biden’s Presidential Library, But Fundraising Challenges Loom

Former President Joe Biden has opted for Delaware as the site of his presidential library, yet the focus now turns to the financial support it will require from private donors.

The ex-senator and vice president is assembling a team of “former aides, friends, and political allies” to spearhead a comprehensive fundraising campaign and identify a specific location, as reported by Associated Press.

However, it’s not without its challenges. Biden’s library team faces the tough task of funding what is being termed the 46th President’s legacy project. Adding to the complexity is the shadow of former President Donald Trump’s critiques regarding the current administration’s shortcomings.

There’s also uncertainty about whether donors from businesses and institutions that have historically contributed—regardless of political affiliation—will be keen to support the library.

While an official site has yet to be confirmed, Wilmington officials pitched four potential locations in March, all in Biden’s hometown.

This week, the Joe and Jill Biden Foundation established a 13-member board to oversee the library project. Prominent figures include former Secretary of State Antony Blinken, advisor Steve Richetti, and Democratic fundraiser Rufus Gifford, who will chair the board.

Gifford mentioned in an interview, “There are certainly people. Maybe they weren’t thinking about those issues that are starting to think about them. We’re not going to create a budget or set unattainable goals for ourselves.”

Costs for presidential libraries have significantly increased over time. The library for George H.W. Bush in 1997 had a budget of $43 million, while Bill Clinton’s reached $165 million, George W. Bush’s estimated at $500 million, and Barack Obama’s projected to hit $1.6 billion.

Gifford indicated that Biden’s library costs would likely fall “somewhere in the middle,” still estimating it could approach the billion-dollar mark.

In contrast, Trump is already moving forward with his library plans, gathering millions from lawsuits against various companies, with some funds allocated for his future library. He even accepted a 747-8 from the Qatari government, which will also be showcased as part of his library.

Traditionally, presidential libraries are housed in buildings managed by the National Archives and associated institutions. Presently, Biden’s library exists only online, featuring a smiling photo of him in the Oval Office.

His supporters genuinely hope that the 82-year-old former president’s optimistic words about American capabilities resonate as they embark on a challenging fundraising mission to make the library a reality.
