Detentions of Activists During Gaza Aid March
Recently, Egyptian officials apprehended anti-Israel activists during a demonstration concerning aid restrictions in Gaza. This march involved participants from around 80 countries, as reported by the Associated Press. Their initiative took place several months after Israel imposed limits on aid to areas controlled by Hamas.
It’s worth noting that in May, Israel had relaxed some of these aid restrictions.
The reported march aimed to be one of the largest demonstrations seen in recent years. Organizers mentioned that Israeli forces had previously intercepted activists and aid boats bound for Gaza earlier this week.
On Friday, the organizers stated that authorities seized the passports of 40 activists. They described the scene, detailing how certain checkpoints were heavily monitored by officers equipped with riot gear and armored vehicles. Security personnel reportedly began detaining individuals and using force to disperse protesters.
Video footage surfaced showing an emotional activist being taken away after boarding a bus for deportation. In another clip, there seemed to be a mix of confusion when the group arrived in Cairo.
Following a deadly attack from Hamas on October 7, 2023, Israel commenced military operations in Gaza, which led to restricted aid efforts and resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths.
During this time, a group of Gazans, holding white flags, gathered to chant against Hamas, marking a rare public outcry against the group’s authority. Footage shared online depicted protesters outside Indonesian hospitals in northern Gaza, calling for an end to what they referred to as tyrannical rule, echoing, “We want to live!”
Dr. Johnny Moore, from the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, previously stated that aid could effectively reach Palestinians without Hamas interfering in humanitarian efforts. He claimed that his organization delivered nearly 10 million meals over a span of several days while avoiding dealings with both Hamas and the UN aid network.
He further argued that the decisions made regarding aid distribution had long been flawed, suggesting that actual assistance could be more effective if managed differently.
These developments come amidst reports that Hamas and the United Nations are attempting to hinder the operations of the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, which receives support from the previous U.S. administration. This assistance is seen as undermining Hamas’s control over aid distribution which they utilize to manage the local population.
On Sunday, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation reported the delivery of over 2 million meals to Palestinian civilians in Gaza, despite ongoing Israeli attacks.
In related news, activist Greta Thunberg recently joined fellow protesters advocating for Gaza, repeatedly criticizing Israel following the tragic events of October 7th.
