Elon Musk Introduces 'X Money' Financial Services Platform as an Alternative to Banks

X Money Launches on Elon Musk’s Social Media Platform

Elon Musk’s platform, X, introduced a new banking feature called “X Money” on Monday. This move aligns with Musk’s vision of creating an all-in-one app for various services.

The X Money service offers a range of banking and financial features directly through the X platform. At this point, it’s accessible only to X Premium and Premium+ subscribers. Users can perform peer-to-peer payments, transfer funds, manage savings accounts, and receive physical Visa debit cards within the app.

As per X’s announcement, X Money enables users to handle common financial tasks just like they would with a regular bank. This includes sending wire transfers, paying bills, receiving checks through the mail, and direct deposit for paychecks. Notably, users may get their paychecks up to two days in advance via direct deposit.

A standout feature of this service is the X Card, which is a physical Visa debit card that provides 3% cash back on qualifying purchases and allows for free ATM withdrawals worldwide. It can also sync with digital wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay for contactless transactions.

Interest rates differ based on the subscription level. Premium+ users can earn a 60% annual percentage yield on their savings accounts right away, while Premium subscribers can achieve this rate later by meeting specific direct deposit conditions.

Deposit accounts are managed by X Money’s banking partner, Cross River Bank, which is an FDIC member, meaning deposits are insured up to $250,000 and enjoy the same federal protections as conventional bank accounts.

Musk’s ties to financial services trace back before his venture into social media. Prior to acquiring Twitter, he started a payments company named X during the early days of the internet, which later merged with PayPal, allowing him to build significant expertise in digital finance.

The introduction of X Money marks an important milestone toward Musk’s goal to transform X into an all-inclusive “everything app.” This idea draws inspiration from successful super apps in Asian markets that blend social media, messaging, payments, and other services into one platform. Musk has frequently highlighted this ambition since taking over the platform.

Musk had previously expressed an ambitious timeline for launching these financial features, stating it would be unrealistic for X not to roll out such services by the end of 2024. The service had already gone through initial testing phases before its launch on Monday.

Currently, the rollout is limited to certain users in the United States, with plans for broader availability soon. By restricting initial access to Premium and Premium+ users, X aims to cater to its most committed subscribers who are already utilizing paid features.

This integration of banking services into social media is quite unique in the U.S., where financial services and social networking have largely remained distinct. Yet, this approach has succeeded elsewhere, particularly with platforms like China’s WeChat, which merges messaging, social media, payments, and a variety of functionalities in one ecosystem.
